Ann Wilson Says #MeToo Is Coming to the Music Industry

Ann Wilson isn't sure why the music industry has so far been spared the wrath of the #MeToo movement, but she's sure it won't last forever.

The Heart singer tells Q104.3 New York's Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein that she's not sure why the anti-sexual abuse movement has so vastly affected the film and television industries over the last year and yet left music largely unscathed.

"It's hypocritical to me that the music industry is sparing itself that, you know?" she told Q104.3. "I think it's because there's a justification that, 'Hey, rock and roll is supposed to be the domain of bad boys and bad girls, so anything goes.' It's hypocritical. It'll happen."

Wilson continued, indicating that "anything is possible" once people start sharing their stories.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's new album, Immortal, is a collection of tributes by Wilson to the musical heroes we've lost along the way.

Among the 10 songs she covers on the album, Wilson tackles the relevant-as-ever "You Don't Own Me" by Leslie Gore. The feminist anthem was a hit for Gore in 1964. Wilson says, like many of the cuts from Immortal, "You Don't Own Me" is timeless, and it might be more important for people to hear the song now than ever before.

"Back when it was a radio hit for Leslie Gore ... it was just her as a teenage girl speaking out against the culture of 1964, right?" Wilson explained. "But that song comes forward into our time really easy. It's way more universal now in our time when we're having a dialogue about all people asking for respect."
