Model Lucy Markovic, who finished as the runner-up on Australia's Next Top Model in 2015, has died at the age of 27 after experiencing complications from a rare brain condition, her partner, Carlo, revealed in a statement on her Instagram Story Friday (April 11) morning via the New York Post.
“Dear friends and family, I regret to inform you that Lucy has passed,” th wrote. “She was at peace. Me, her mother and my mother were present with her.
“We ask you to please give us space in these hard times. May Lucy rest in peace.”
Markovic, who finished second to Brittany Beattie on the ninth season of Australia's Next Top Model when she was just 16, had suffered a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which is described as being an abnormal connection between arteries and veins that can result in bleeding, as well as brain tissue damage, and saw her go into a coma this week after having undergone emergency surgery earlier this month. The model had recently discussed her battle with the disease, which is reported to occur in 1 in 100,000 people, in the weeks leading up to her death.
“Lucky + unlucky – Radiation, seizures, heavy medication and 4 years later,” Markovic wrote in the caption of a post shared on her Threads account. “I will be undergoing brain surgery on the 26th of this month for the AVM in the back of my brain (arteriovenous malformation) that is the size of a golf ball.Excited, thankful, scared, supported, hopeful.Full flood of emotions in this time. Life’s a journey and I’m ready for the next chapter. 🎀🩷🫶🏼✨"
